Fess up if you actually owned a VW Microbus or went to shows in one. I still see a disproportionate number at RatDog, Furthur, etc.

The coolest vehicle I ever owned was a '66 split windsheid vw bus, took it on spring and fall tours 84, broke down early into spring tour 85 and retired from active duty not long after (totaled while parked in my parents driveway by a drunk girl who was celebrating her HS graduation.) I went on to own two different '71 buses, one nicknamed Lucy that looked just like craven's Bertha. Logged lots of tour miles in that; crossed the country many times. Became pretty handy at repairs, and removed many engines from VWs back in those days. (I don't even change my own oil anymore.)

Hell yes. I owned a 1983 Vanagon that was teh color of Melba Toast with a tan top. Very close to this pic:

Photobucket

The kid that sold it to me begged me for the next six months to sell it back to him. I ended up selling it back after 8 months. I was in the Marines at the time. Loved that thing. Never took it to a show though.

I owned a '72 orange VW Squareback that I drove to over 100 shows between '77 and '83.
When I moved to Hawaii in '86 I bought a blue and white '76 VW van, and drove it to the Jerry Show in Hilo in '90.

Oooh - what was it like to see him in Hilo? Where the heck did he play? I saw him on the same tour in the Waikiki Shell - one of the coolest places I've ever seen a show and the last time I ever saw him. Right in the shadow of Diamond Head. Jer wore a black aloha shirt and looked great - he was styling.

I think I got the first two off of The Jerry Site. Third is some of Jer in Hawaii , probable the 90 tour.

Thanks. That 3rd pic is an 'if only' picture. He looks so good. Then again, doesn't everyone in an aloha shirt? :)

I've read that one of his great highs was learning how to scuba dive in Kona.

I do believe that being in the water was the best therapy for Jer. Billy & him loved to be together during the scuba adventures.Don't know if you have these but it goes with the conversation.

Yeah. we flew out for that Waikiki Shell show, first time I saw jerry's pale legs seeing as he was wearing shorts. The Hilo show was on Earth Day at the Civic Center which was about 1/3 full... Good Times.

Did not own one, but my good friend Brett did. We only went to one show in it (Alpine '83?), but had many great adventures.

'67 Deluxe with pass-through front seat, split windshield and barn doors on the side. Bought it for $1600 in 1989 and sold it for $5500 in 1993.

Loved them barn doors - much nicer than the later model sliding door.
And that awesome shelf that ran the full length under the dash!

My dad had a 71 bus in the late 70's and 80's. The sliding door was propped open every Sunday morning while 500 newspapers were disgorged out the side. I always felt like I was in the side door of a Huey lobbing bombs out on the Viet Nam countryside (when in reality I was tossing The Huntsville Times and hoping the paper wouldn't come out of the wet wrap and blow around the neighborhood.)

In the early 90's I had a 77 VW Deluxe Campmobile. It had everything: stove, sink, refrigerator, pop-up roof, front seat hammock, and green and gold plaid seats. It looked like this:

Yea had a 72 bus - green with white roof
Took to many a show

Actually stalled out in front of the Lunt Fontaine on way to Jerry show
Got out and push started it right at the front door
Line of people going in cheered as the engine tunes over
Bill Graham was just watching and smiling at the door

as a side note:
his future mother-in-law refused to let her daughter ride in that "damned old hippie bus"

'83 Westphalia Camper. Caramel was official color, but it was more of a burnt orange. Saw twenty some odd shows in late 80's and early 90's. In fourth gear, it became the "shuttlecraft" from Star Trek, just floating down the road with a nice dark star blasting. Had our favorite sticker on back, "darkstarvergnügen". Gone are the days.Peace.

Jeeezzel peet, C! That is/was in great shape when photo'd...outstanding.

I had a 67 VW sq back for yrs and yrs; $500 bucks, no speedo (during the days of 55 mph nationwide!?), but it was already faded pink (from some dull red color?) on metal by the time I got it...

Known as Babar, for some odd reason.
